Axios

" And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” Matthew 25:40
Worthy in Christ, Serving in Love
The Greek word “Axios” means “worthy”. Each human being is worthy, for our worth is given by our Creator, God who formed us, and our Redeemer, Jesus Christ who died for us. Made in the image of God, each person is deserving of our service, for when we serve one another, we serve our Lord Himself.
The Body of Christ Serving Christ
Each of us is called to serve, for service is a reflection of our love for God. As Christ instructed his disciples, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet” John 13:14. Christ asked Peter if He loved him, and instructed him, “feed My sheep” John 21:17.
He also tells us, “for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me…. Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” Matthew 25:35-36,40 For “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world” James 1:27. Christ asks us to witness to him “in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” Acts 1:8.
God calls on us to use our time, talents, and treasures to serve the needs of our brothers and sisters. Even if you are busy, our Lord teaches us that the greatest kind of giving is giving out of one’s need. The one who gives from his poverty (from what he himself needs) shows that his giving is filled with much love, sacrifice, and a spirit of putting others before himself . “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” Luke 21: 3-4 You can offer to the Lord out of your need — whether it be your time, money, or even from your rest and health.
Axios aims to provide opportunities for the congregation to minister to one another and to the community. As the body of Christ, together we are serving Christ by ministering to the needs of our brothers and sisters. For “inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me” Matthew 25:40.
Patron Saints
The service is blessed to be under the heavenly intercession of St. Bishoy and St. Verena, two saints whose lives reflect deep faith, humility, and love for others, especially in serving the needs of others.
St. Bishoy is revered as “the righteous and perfect man, the beloved of our Good Savior.” He reflects a life where holiness and humble service are inseparable. His most-told story was seeing an elderly man whom others ignored and lifted him onto his shoulders—only then discovering he was carrying the Lord Christ Himself. The Church preserves this as a living lesson of the service our Lord refers to in Matthew 25: to serve the needs of others is to serve Christ.
St. Verena is remembered for her life of compassion and mercy. She served the sick, the poor, and the strangers with kindness, teaching them cleanliness and care. Her service was love in action, showing that holiness is found in small acts of mercy done with a pure heart.
Together, St. Bishoy and St. Verena represent the heart of Axios — “Worthy in Christ, Serving in Love.”
Through their prayers, may our service always reflect Christ’s love and humility.
